Ok, we all know there aren’t many great films, which are based on video games. The other way around it’s almost the same.

Nonetheless there are going to be a lot more of them, simply because they bring in enough revenue.

To make them a little bit better let’s discuss what a good movie should do?

  • - Tell the exact same story of a video game 1:1 ?
  • - Tell another story in the same universe with the same characters ?
  • - Tell another story in the same universe with other characters ? Expand the universe.

Next we have to find out what “good” films do. Of course this is highly subjective.

What is the first movie that comes to your mind when you think about games? For me it’s: Tomb Raider

It might not be the greatest film ever, but it’s very entertaining. It tells the story of a Lara Croft, who lost her father and tries everything imaginable to get him back. It makes Lara more human. The connection to her father is very important in this film and is one the key elements why it’s successful.

In a film like “Resident Evil” we do not get much background information about “Alice”, yet the movie was very entertaining. It tells the story of “Alice”, who lost her memory, wakes up in a grand estate and slowly figures out that she is in the middle of a nightmare and was partly responsible for it. This inner conflict is very entertaining and it is exciting how she slowly finds out more bit by bit.

We need:

a) A deep character we can identify with – the conflict that she was struggling between “saving the world” and “getting her father back” was good but I found the characters a lot more interesting.

b) Great conflict that slowly develops

Uwe Boll – Time to excel!

I do not want to criticize Uwe Boll, but his movies are usually not the best out there. That’s why many people do not like to watch films based on games.Uwe Boll is probably responsible for the most films based on video games. I think it is a  great idea to focus on a niche you like and simply try to master it – but so far he did not excel. Let’s hope he will!

Your opinions are needed, what do you want to see in a film based on a video game?

According to CNET the largest video platform in the world YouTube will soon be publishing videos from Sony on their site.

The latest addition to YouTube are Clips from Disney. Now they also plan to add full tv episodes, which will not be embeddable.

Lost – soon to be seen on YouTube?

Obviously Google is trying to find a way to monetize the traffic hungry money-loosing video service.  If they would offer movies for a fair “on-demand” price, I’m sure a lot of people would be interested.

The competition, Sony’s movie site “Crackle.com” has recently acquired the rights to publish videos from “Hulu” and “AOL”.

Personally, I would definetly pay something to watch Lost on YouTube. People outside the USA have a hard time to watch popular TV-series just like “Lost”, because ABC.com banned all IP’s of foreign countries. Wouldn’t it be great to have a chance to watch it on YouTube for a low fee?

From my point of view, Google would be doing fine with a “Premium” Youtube that offers movies and series “on-demand” for a low monthly price.

An incomplete cut of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” leaked onto the Internet. Many sites have already reviewed the movie based on this unfinished cut.

However, many sites refuse to review the movie before an official final cut has been released. I think it is just fair to give the editors the chance to add everything they can to make that movie even better.
We all know how important film editing is nowadays. Heck, without special effects and dramatic cuts a movie will always get a worse rating.

“He’s lived with this thing for 10 years. But he’s also a man and knows that life isn’t fair, and is more determined than ever,” said Rothman. “Hugh and I exchanged e-mails: Basically, we’re not going to let the bastards win. But we didn’t use the word ‘bastards.’ That’s a slightly sanitized version.” Source

Hopefully we will soon be able to enjoy the final “X-Men Origins”.
